JAN-21 - Janissaries | John Jenkins Designs

This two-figure set represents Ottoman Janissaries advancing during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, depicting members of the elite infantry corps serving under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

The soldiers wear distinctive red uniforms and are equipped with muskets. One figure advances with his firearm held across his chest, while the second moves forward with his musket ready and pointed downwards.

The contrasting positions capture the appearance of Janissary infantry advancing together in preparation for combat.

The Janissaries were among the most respected military formations of the Ottoman Empire. Originally established as the Sultan's household infantry, they developed into a highly disciplined standing force noted for its training, organisation and battlefield effectiveness.

The corps was also among the early military formations to adopt firearms as a principal weapon, contributing to the development of Ottoman military power.

Janissaries received regular salaries and were subject to strict regulations intended to maintain their discipline and loyalty to the Sultan.

During the Great Siege of Malta, the Ottoman army relied heavily upon its infantry while attempting to overcome the fortified positions defended by the Knights Hospitaller.

The siege lasted for nearly four months before the Ottoman forces withdrew in September 1565.

This two-figure set is an excellent addition to a Janissary infantry formation, particularly when combined with the alternative uniform colours available in the collection.
