JAN-22 - Janissaries | John Jenkins Designs

This two-figure set depicts Ottoman Janissaries advancing during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, representing the elite infantry of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

The figures are shown wearing light blue uniforms and carrying muskets. One soldier advances with his firearm positioned across his chest, while the second moves forward with his musket held ready and pointed downwards.

The complementary poses illustrate the movement of disciplined infantry and make the set particularly suitable for constructing larger Ottoman military formations.

The Janissaries occupied an important position within the Ottoman army, serving as the Sultan's elite household infantry. Their organisation and training made them one of the most formidable military forces of the 16th century.

Unlike many other military formations of the period, the Janissaries were maintained as a permanent force and received regular payment for their service.

They were also early adopters of firearms, employing muskets as an increasingly important part of their military equipment.

During the Ottoman campaign against Malta in 1565, Janissary infantry participated in the prolonged efforts to capture the island from the Knights Hospitaller.

The siege began in May and continued until September, when the invading Ottoman forces withdrew.

This set complements the red- and green-uniformed Janissaries, allowing collectors to create a varied and substantial infantry formation for a historical Ottoman battlefield display.
