JAN-23 - Janissaries | John Jenkins Designs
This two-figure set represents Ottoman Janissaries serving during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, depicting soldiers from the elite infantry corps of the Ottoman Empire.
The figures wear distinctive green uniforms and are equipped with muskets. One soldier advances with his firearm across his chest, while the second carries his musket in a ready position, pointed towards the ground.
Their advancing poses provide an effective representation of infantry moving together as part of an organised military formation.
The Janissaries were among the most important troops serving the Ottoman Sultan. As members of the Sultan's household infantry, they underwent strict training and were expected to maintain discipline and loyalty.
The corps became particularly noted for its early adoption of firearms, which contributed to its effectiveness during the military campaigns of the Ottoman Empire.
Under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman army developed into a formidable force incorporating disciplined infantry, artillery, cavalry and supporting troops.
In 1565, a major Ottoman expedition attempted to capture Malta from the Knights Hospitaller, whose fortified positions presented significant obstacles to the invading army.
The resulting siege lasted nearly four months, ending with the Ottoman withdrawal in September.
These green-uniformed Janissaries make an excellent addition to an Ottoman infantry display, particularly when combined with JAN-21 and JAN-22 to create larger formations featuring different uniform colours.
