JT-01 - Virginia Militia | John Jenkins Designs
This two-figure set represents an Officer and Drummer of the Virginia Militia during the early years of English settlement in North America and the conflicts known as the Anglo-Powhatan Wars.
The figures depict the command and musical elements associated with the colonial militia, representing an important part of the military organisation of the developing Virginia settlement.
Jamestown was established by the Virginia Company of London in May 1607, becoming the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. Located along the James River in present-day Virginia, the settlement faced numerous challenges during its early years.
Relations between the English settlers and the Powhatan peoples were often strained, eventually resulting in three major conflicts during the first half of the 17th century.
The First Anglo-Powhatan War began in 1609 and concluded with a peace settlement in 1614. Further hostilities followed in 1622, when coordinated attacks against English settlements resulted in substantial casualties.
The Virginia Militia played an important role in defending colonial settlements and conducting military operations during these conflicts.
This Officer and Drummer set provides an excellent command element for a Virginia Militia collection, particularly when displayed alongside musketeers, swordsmen and standard bearers.
