JT-04 - Virginia Militia | John Jenkins Designs

This two-figure set depicts Virginia Militiamen serving during the early 17th century, representing the English colonial forces involved in the Anglo-Powhatan Wars.

The set includes one soldier firing a musket supported by a rest, while the second is shown ducking with a sword and shield. These contrasting figures illustrate the different weapons and fighting positions represented within the colonial militia.

The Jamestown settlement was established by the Virginia Company of London in May 1607, becoming England's first permanent settlement in North America.

As the English colony developed, relations with the neighbouring Powhatan communities became increasingly strained. Competition over territory and resources contributed to the outbreak of the First Anglo-Powhatan War in 1609.

Although a peace settlement was reached in 1614, further conflict followed when Opchanacanough organised attacks against English plantations and communities along the James River in March 1622.

The colonial militia was responsible for defending settlements and conducting military operations against Powhatan forces during the prolonged hostilities.

This two-figure set provides an excellent addition to a Virginia Militia display, combining a musketeer and a close-combat soldier to represent different elements of the colonial fighting force.
