JT-05 - Virginia Militia | John Jenkins Designs
This two-figure set depicts Virginia Militiamen during the Anglo-Powhatan Wars, representing soldiers who served in the English colony of Virginia during the first half of the 17th century.
The figures include a soldier equipped with a musket and rest, accompanied by another armed with a sword and shield. Together, they illustrate the combination of firearms and close-combat weapons carried by members of the colonial militia.
The settlement at Jamestown was established in May 1607 by the Virginia Company of London, creating England's first permanent settlement in the Americas.
Its location along the James River placed the settlers within the territory of the Powhatan peoples, an extensive alliance of indigenous communities under the leadership of Wahunsenacawh, known to the English as Chief Powhatan.
Relations between the settlers and the Powhatan deteriorated as the colony expanded, resulting in three major conflicts between 1609 and 1646.
The Virginia Militia became an important component of the colony's defence, with armed settlers participating in military expeditions and operations against Powhatan communities.
This set complements the wider Virginia Militia collection and is particularly suitable for recreating colonial military formations, defensive positions and scenes from the Anglo-Powhatan Wars.
Now available from The Military Workshop.
