JT-06 - Virginia Militia | John Jenkins Designs

This set represents two Virginia Militiamen serving during the Anglo-Powhatan Wars, the series of conflicts between English colonists and the indigenous Powhatan peoples during the early 17th century.

The figures depict a musketeer preparing his firearm and rest, accompanied by a soldier advancing with a sword and shield. The combination illustrates the varied weapons carried by members of the colonial militia.

The Virginia colony began with the establishment of Jamestown in May 1607 by the Virginia Company of London.

Although the settlement became England's first permanent foothold in North America, its early years were marked by difficulties and increasingly strained relations with the Powhatan communities of eastern Virginia.

The First Anglo-Powhatan War began in 1609 and was followed by further conflict during the 1620s. On 22 March 1622, coordinated attacks organised under Opchanacanough struck numerous English settlements and plantations along the James River.

The attacks were followed by prolonged military reprisals, with colonial forces conducting repeated operations against Powhatan settlements.

These two Virginia Militiamen provide an excellent addition to a colonial infantry formation, particularly when displayed alongside other musketeers, swordsmen and military command figures.
