JT-06N - Virginia Militia | John Jenkins Designs

This four-figure set depicts Virginia Militiamen serving during the Anglo-Powhatan Wars of the early 17th century.

The set includes two soldiers preparing their muskets and rests, together with two infantrymen advancing with swords and shields. These contrasting poses illustrate the combination of firearms and close-combat weapons employed by the English colonial militia.

The Jamestown settlement was established by the Virginia Company of London in May 1607 along the James River in present-day Virginia.

The settlers encountered the Powhatan peoples, whose territories extended across much of the surrounding region. Although periods of cooperation existed, disputes over territory and colonial expansion contributed to increasingly hostile relations.

The First Anglo-Powhatan War began in 1609, followed by a second major conflict after attacks organised by Opchanacanough in March 1622.

The colonial militia took part in the defence of English settlements and subsequent military expeditions against Powhatan communities.

The combination of musketeers and sword-and-shield infantry makes this four-figure set particularly suitable for recreating a larger colonial fighting force.

It complements the Virginia Militia command figures and other infantry sets, allowing collectors to construct more substantial historical battlefield displays.
