JT-07 - Virginia Militia | John Jenkins Designs

This two-figure set represents Virginia Militiamen participating in the Anglo-Powhatan Wars during the early years of English colonial settlement in North America.

The figures include one soldier firing a musket supported by a rest, while the second kneels with a pistol and round shield. Their contrasting weapons and positions illustrate the different equipment employed by the colonial militia.

The English settlement at Jamestown was established in May 1607 and became the first permanent English colony in the Americas.

Relations between the settlers and the neighbouring Powhatan communities deteriorated as colonial expansion placed increasing pressure on indigenous territories.

The Anglo-Powhatan Wars consisted of three major conflicts fought between 1609 and 1646.

During the second conflict, which began with coordinated Powhatan attacks in March 1622, English plantations and outlying communities suffered substantial losses.

The colonial militia subsequently conducted repeated military operations against Powhatan settlements as the conflict continued.

These two militiamen provide an excellent addition to a colonial infantry display, particularly when combined with other musketeers, swordsmen and command figures to recreate defensive positions or battlefield engagements.
