POW-04 - Powhatan Warriors | John Jenkins Designs

This two-figure set represents Powhatan archers during the period of the Anglo-Powhatan Wars, which were fought between the indigenous peoples of eastern Virginia and English colonists during the early 17th century.

The set includes one warrior standing and reaching for an arrow, while the second kneels with his bow ready to release an arrow. These contrasting poses illustrate different stages of preparing and using the Powhatan longbow.

The Powhatan were organised into a confederation of approximately 30 communities under the leadership of Wahunsenacawh, known to the English as Chief Powhatan. Their homeland, Tsenacommacah, covered a substantial area of eastern Virginia.

The longbow was one of the principal weapons encountered by the English settlers. Measuring approximately five to six feet in length, these bows were commonly fashioned from witch-hazel or hickory.

Relations between the Powhatan communities and the English settlers deteriorated as colonial settlements expanded, leading to a series of armed conflicts beginning in 1609.

This set provides an excellent addition to Powhatan infantry formations, particularly when combined with other archers to depict woodland engagements and the defence of indigenous territories.
