RTLANC-09 - Lancastrian Billmen | John Jenkins Designs
This two-figure set depicts Lancastrian Billmen belonging to the retinue of Rhys ap Thomas, representing soldiers who fought for the Lancastrian cause during the Battle of Bosworth Field on 22 August 1485.
The Wars of the Roses were a series of dynastic conflicts between the Houses of Lancaster and York, culminating in the defeat of King Richard III by Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond. The victory established Henry Tudor as King Henry VII and marked the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.
During this period, armies were assembled from the followers and retainers of powerful noblemen. Distinctive livery colours and badges were important means of identifying these groups and demonstrating their allegiance to individual commanders.
This set represents two infantrymen from the contingent associated with Rhys ap Thomas, adding an important element to the Lancastrian forces depicted in the collection.
The figures are particularly suitable for display alongside Lancastrian archers, knights, standard bearers and other billmen, allowing collectors to recreate larger infantry formations from the final major confrontation of the Wars of the Roses.
