The Cheyenne Dog Soldiers became one of the best-known warrior societies of the Plains, combining military responsibilities with strong traditions of courage, status and service to their people.

Selected warriors could carry long ceremonial sashes sometimes described as “dog ropes”. In desperate circumstances, a warrior might stake himself to the ground and remain in position while others withdrew, symbolising his determination not to abandon his responsibilities.

SSB-35 – Dog Soldier represents a warrior from this formidable tradition during the period of conflict on the Plains in 1868.

The figure makes a strong individual centrepiece among other Cheyenne warriors and adds another aspect of warrior society culture to a larger Thunder on the Plains collection.
