SSB-36 - Cheyenne Dog Soldier | John Jenkins Designs
This Cheyenne Dog Soldier represents a warrior of the Dog Men Society during the conflicts on the American Great Plains in the 19th century.
The figure belongs to the Thunder on the Plains collection, associated with the fighting in September 1868 during which the Cheyenne warrior Roman Nose was killed.
The Dog Men were one of the most prominent Cheyenne warrior societies, comprising a substantial proportion of the tribe's fighting men.
Members were associated with distinctive ceremonial clothing, weapons and traditions reflecting their responsibilities to the community.
The society's four bravest warriors were selected to carry the Dog Ropes, long sashes that could be secured to the ground during battle.
When the Cheyenne were forced to retreat, these warriors were expected to hold their position and protect the withdrawal of their companions.
Dog Soldier regalia could include distinctive feathered headdresses, painted leggings and ceremonial ornaments.
This individual warrior provides an important addition to a Cheyenne military collection, particularly when displayed alongside other Dog Soldiers and figures representing the warrior societies of the Great Plains.
Now available from The Military Workshop.
