Henry VIII’s six marriages produced some of the most famous women in English history, and Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr could hardly have experienced more different fortunes as his fifth and sixth queens.

Young Catherine Howard married Henry in 1540, but her position quickly unravelled following accusations concerning her relationships with other men. She was arrested, imprisoned and ultimately executed at the Tower of London in 1542.

Catherine Parr became Henry’s sixth and final wife the following year. Intelligent and well educated, she played an important role within the royal household and helped reconcile Henry with his daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. Most importantly, she survived the king, who died in January 1547.
