One of England’s most celebrated monarchs, Queen Elizabeth I ruled for more than 44 years and gave her name to an extraordinary period of English history.
The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth’s path to the throne was anything but secure. Yet after becoming queen in 1558, she proved to be an exceptionally capable political survivor, navigating religious division, foreign threats and repeated questions surrounding the succession.
Elizabeth never married, giving rise to her famous title “The Virgin Queen.” Her reign witnessed the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the flourishing of English drama and literature, and the growing influence of England on the international stage.
