WIM-15 - Lacrosse Players | John Jenkins Designs

This two-figure set depicts Woodland Indian Lacrosse Players participating in the traditional sporting game played by indigenous peoples of North America.

The figures belong to the Battle on the Monongahela, 1755 collection and represent an important part of the cultural and recreational traditions of the Woodland Indian communities.

Lacrosse has its origins among the Eastern Woodland peoples and other indigenous communities, with variations of the game played across large areas of North America.

Traditional matches could involve hundreds of participants and sometimes continued over several days. Games were often played on expansive open grounds between neighbouring settlements, with the distance between goals varying considerably.

Players used sticks to catch, carry and propel the ball towards the opposing goal. The large number of participants often resulted in intense contests, with groups of players moving together as they competed for possession.

Lacrosse was more than a recreational activity. It was also used to develop physical strength, prepare young warriors for combat, celebrate important occasions and, in some circumstances, settle disputes between communities.

This two-figure set is an excellent addition to a traditional Woodland Indian lacrosse scene, particularly when combined with other players, spectators and the lacrosse game accessories in the collection.
