The 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, mustered in June 1861 at Madison, was a three-year volunteer unit that became a prominent part of the Union Army's famed "Iron Brigade". Initially wearing grey uniforms at the First Battle of Bull Run, they quickly transitioned to federal blue and saw intense action in the eastern theater, suffering one of the highest casualty percentages in the Union army
