The 91st Regiment of Foot was a Scottish Highland infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1794 during the wars against Revolutionary France. It became one of the distinguished Highland regiments of the Victorian era and later carried the title “Princess Louise’s Argyllshire Highlanders.”
Origins
The regiment was raised by:

John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll
in Argyllshire, Scotland.
Like many Highland regiments, it drew heavily from Scottish Highland communities and preserved Highland traditions, dress, and military customs.
Service History
The regiment served throughout the British Empire during the 19th century, including:
- the Napoleonic era,
- South Africa,
- Canada,
- the West Indies,
- and India.
It earned a reputation as a reliable line infantry regiment during Britain’s imperial campaigns.
Princess Louise
The regiment later became associated with:
- Princess Louise
Her patronage led to the title:
“Princess Louise’s Argyllshire Highlanders.”
Uniform
The regiment wore traditional Highland dress including:
- tartan kilts,
- sporrans,
- feather bonnets,
- and Highland accoutrements typical of Scottish regiments.
Amalgamation
In 1881, under the Childers Reforms, the regiment merged with the:
- 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot
to form the:
- Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
which continued the traditions of both regiments.
