The mobile campaigns of the Second World War demonstrated the value of artillery capable of keeping pace with fast-moving armoured formations.

Germany's Sd.Kfz. 124 Wespe answered this requirement by mounting a 10.5cm leFH 18-series howitzer on a modified Panzer II chassis. The resulting self-propelled gun proved successful enough to become an important component of German armoured artillery units.
