ALM-05 – Andalusian Mercenary | John Jenkins Designs
During the 11th century, the Iberian Peninsula was divided between several Christian kingdoms and Muslim-ruled territories collectively known as Al-Andalus.
The period associated with El Cid was marked by shifting political alliances, military campaigns and the growing influence of powerful North African movements.
According to the historical information provided by John Jenkins Designs, the conflicts of this period were considerably more complex than a straightforward confrontation between Christian and Muslim armies.
Christian rulers sometimes fought other Christian rulers, while Muslim states frequently employed soldiers and allies from different religious and political backgrounds.
Andalusian mercenaries could consequently serve within several different armies, including those associated with the Almoravids.
ALM-05 – Andalusian Mercenary by John Jenkins Designs depicts a mounted Andalusian mercenary knight carrying a distinctive black banner decorated with yellow Arabic script.
The figure represents the mounted warriors associated with the military conflicts of the Reconquista and the armies operating in medieval Spain.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs The Crusades – El Cid and the Reconquista collection, this figure complements the Almoravid cavalry and other mounted warriors in the range.
