The Natal Native Horse played a vital yet often overlooked role during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Recruited largely from experienced African horsemen who possessed an intimate understanding of the South African landscape, these mounted troops provided reconnaissance, escort duties and rapid communication for British columns operating across the vast and often unforgiving countryside. Their speed, local knowledge and exceptional riding skills made them indispensable during a campaign where mobility frequently determined success or failure.

Although lightly equipped compared with regular cavalry, the Natal Native Horse consistently demonstrated courage and professionalism while operating in dangerous conditions. They participated in several significant engagements, often riding far ahead of the main force to gather intelligence or screen advancing columns. Their contribution to the campaign has increasingly been recognised by historians as an important part of Britain's operations during the conflict.
