The uThulwana Regiment was one of the seasoned amabutho (age-based military regiments) that formed part of King Cetshwayo's powerful Zulu army during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Trained from an early age in the traditional methods of Zulu warfare, its warriors were renowned for their discipline, endurance, and skill in close combat. Armed with the fearsome iklwa stabbing spear, throwing spears, and the iconic cowhide shield, they fought using the famous "Horns of the Buffalo" tactic, designed to envelop and overwhelm their opponents with speed and precision.
The regiment took part in several of the campaign's major engagements, helping to demonstrate why the Zulu army earned the respect of both friend and foe.
