GMP-15T – Taira Samurai | John Jenkins Designs
During the Gempei War, the elite samurai warriors of Japan were closely associated with mounted archery.
According to John Jenkins Designs, the Japanese longbow, or yumi, was among the most highly regarded weapons employed during the conflict.
The role of the mounted samurai archer centred upon individual marksmanship, with warriors seeking worthy opponents during battle.
Traditional engagements could begin with specially constructed whistling arrows fired into the air, signalling the commencement of combat.
The elite samurai wore distinctive armour known as yoroi, constructed from lacquered leather scales and silk lacing. This provided protection while mounted, although its rigid construction limited movement when fighting on foot.
GMP-15T – Taira Samurai by John Jenkins Designs represents a mounted samurai archer serving the Taira Clan.
The figure portrays the military traditions of the mounted warrior elite during the Gempei War.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Gempei War collection, this model complements the Taira Clan foot archers and retainers.
