GMP-20MA – Minamoto Retainer | John Jenkins Designs
The Gempei War was a national civil war fought between the rival Taira and Minamoto clans from 1180 to 1185.
The conflict ultimately ended with the defeat of the Taira and the emergence of the Kamakura shogunate under Minamoto no Yoritomo.
While elite samurai warriors occupied an important position within the armies of medieval Japan, they were frequently accompanied by smaller groups of retainers.
According to John Jenkins Designs, these retainers and less wealthy samurai often wore a simpler form of armour known as do-maru.
This armour was constructed using treated leather and silk lacing and provided an alternative to the more elaborate yoroi worn by the mounted samurai elite.
GMP-20MA – Minamoto Retainer by John Jenkins Designs depicts a warrior serving the Minamoto Clan, equipped with armour and a naginata.
The figure complements the other Minamoto retainers and mounted samurai within the Gempei War collection.
