GMP-21TB – Taira Retainer | John Jenkins Designs

During the late Heian period, the Taira Clan became one of the most influential families in Japan, maintaining close political connections with the imperial court.

Their struggle against the rival Minamoto family resulted in the Gempei War, which lasted from 1180 until 1185.

John Jenkins Designs describes how the military forces of the period included elite samurai accompanied by retainers wearing simpler armour known as do-maru.

This form of protection was constructed using treated leather and silk lacing and was less elaborate than the yoroi armour associated with the mounted samurai elite.

GMP-21TB – Taira Retainer by John Jenkins Designs represents a warrior serving the Taira Clan.

The figure wears a light blue tunic with red armour, providing an alternative colour scheme to GMP-21TA.

It complements the other Taira retainers and samurai figures in the manufacturer's Gempei War collection.
