GMP-22MA – Samurai Retainer | John Jenkins Designs

During the late Heian period, the military forces of Japan included samurai warriors supported by groups of lighter-armoured retainers.

The Gempei War, fought between the Minamoto and Taira clans from 1180 to 1185, brought these forces into a prolonged struggle for political power.

John Jenkins Designs describes how retainers and less wealthy samurai frequently wore do-maru armour, a simpler form of protection made using treated leather and silk lacing.

These warriors accompanied the more heavily armoured samurai who formed the military elite.

GMP-22MA – Samurai Retainer by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Minamoto Clan warrior wearing red and black armour with a yellow tunic.

The figure is armed with a naginata held forward, representing one of the retainers serving the Minamoto Clan.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Gempei War collection, this miniature complements the other Japanese samurai retainers and mounted warriors.
