MGMP-01A – Warrior Monk | John Jenkins Designs

The Gempei War (1180–1185) was a major civil war in Japan between the rival Taira and Minamoto clans during the late Heian period.

An important third force during the conflict was the warrior monks, known as Sohei, who were associated with powerful Buddhist monasteries.

According to John Jenkins Designs, these monks sometimes fought alongside the Minamoto and sometimes supported the Taira, depending upon the interests of their religious communities.

At the Battle of Uji Bridge in 1180, warrior monks from the pro-Minamoto temple of Todai-ji confronted a substantial Taira force.

MGMP-01A – Warrior Monk depicts a Japanese warrior monk wearing distinctive red robes and carrying a naginata, a traditional Japanese polearm.

The figure represents the warrior monks who participated in the fighting during the Gempei War, complementing other Sohei figures in the collection.
