The 28th Regiment of Foot earned everlasting fame during the Battle of Alexandria in 1801, when French cavalry attacked from both front and rear. Ordered to face about, the regiment formed its legendary "Back-to-Back" formation and successfully repelled repeated attacks. This extraordinary display of courage and discipline later earned the regiment the unique honour of wearing a badge on both the front and rear of its headdress—a distinction unmatched within the British Army. The regiment went on to fight with distinction throughout the Peninsular War and at Waterloo in 1815.
