The SFA033 - Crouching Zulu captures a Zulu warrior in a moment of concentration and readiness, poised to strike or move forward during the fierce battles of the late 19th century.
Zulu warriors were renowned for their discipline, endurance and battlefield skill. Organised into regiments known as amabutho, they trained extensively in close combat and followed the military traditions developed during the reign of King Shaka Zulu, whose reforms transformed the Zulu army into one of Africa’s most formidable fighting forces.
The crouched stance of this figure creates a sense of movement and anticipation, portraying the warrior as he prepares to engage the enemy. Armed with traditional weapons and protected by his shield, he represents the thousands of Zulu fighters who took part in the dramatic clashes of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
