The Zulu military system was developed into a highly effective force, particularly under King Shaka Zulu, whose reforms created a disciplined warrior society based around age-regiment structures. By 1879, the Zulu army was capable of mobilising thousands of trained warriors.
The Anglo-Zulu War saw some of the most dramatic encounters of the Victorian military era. Battles such as Isandlwana and Ulundi demonstrated both the strength of the Zulu army and the determination of British forces attempting to expand imperial control into Zululand.
