SS114 - Soldier Carrying Base Plate SS Mortar Team
Among the most important components of any infantry mortar was its heavy base plate. This substantial piece absorbed the tremendous recoil generated when the weapon fired, providing the stable platform necessary for accurate and sustained indirect fire. Although cumbersome to transport, the base plate was absolutely essential to the operation of the mortar.
This figure depicts an SS soldier carrying the mortar's base plate as his unit relocates to a new firing position. Transporting such equipment demanded considerable physical strength and endurance, particularly across rough ground where every member of the crew also carried personal weapons, ammunition, and field gear.
Expertly sculpted to convey both weight and movement, the figure illustrates one of the less frequently represented aspects of military service—the hard physical labour required simply to position battlefield equipment where it was needed. It is a perfect companion for other mortar team figures, creating a complete and historically accurate support section.
Building a full mortar crew offers collectors the opportunity to demonstrate how infantry support weapons actually operated in the field. The Military Workshop proudly presents historical military figures that celebrate not only the technology of warfare but also the teamwork and dedication of the soldiers who employed it.
