VIK-32B – Viking Warrior | John Jenkins Designs

During the Viking Age, infantry battles frequently involved opposing formations of warriors fighting at close quarters with spears, swords, axes and shields.

The Viking shield wall, or Skjaldborg, was designed to provide protection through the close cooperation of soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder.

According to John Jenkins Designs, this formation was effective while the warriors maintained their positions, but once an enemy succeeded in breaking the line, the defenders could quickly become disorganised.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066 demonstrated the intensity of these engagements, when the Norwegian army of King Harald Sigurdsson was defeated by the Anglo-Saxon forces.

VIK-32B by John Jenkins Designs depicts a fallen warrior lying upon the battlefield, with a distinctive red-and-white quartered shield.

The figure provides an alternative casualty variation to VIK-32A and can be incorporated into a larger battlefield display featuring attacking and defending warriors.

Part of the Age of Arthur – The Vikings collection.
