The Panzerkampfwagen III was originally designed in the 1930s as a standard German medium tank. By the later stages of the World War II, it had been adapted into specialised roles.
The Ausf. N variant was equipped with:
- A short-barrel 7.5 cm KwK 37 gun, originally intended for infantry support
- Thicker armour improvements compared to earlier versions
- Secondary machine guns for close defence
Unlike earlier Panzer III variants designed for tank-versus-tank combat, the Ausf. N was primarily used for close infantry support and defensive operations.
Operational role
By the time the Ausf. N entered widespread service (1942–1945), the Panzer III platform was increasingly outclassed by newer Allied and Soviet tanks. As a result, it was repurposed to:
- Support infantry assaults
- Defend static or semi-static positions
- Operate alongside heavier tanks like the Panzer IV and Panther in mixed formations
Markings like “#114”
A designation such as “#114” is typically:
- A unit tactical number painted on the hull
- Used for identification within a Panzer company or battalion
- Not a unique historical vehicle identity on its own, but a modelling or representation detail
Crew and operation
A Panzer III was typically crewed by five men:
- Commander
- Gunner
- Loader
- Driver
- Radio operator/hull machine gunner
Coordination inside the cramped turret and hull was essential, especially during combat where rapid target acquisition and communication were critical.
