31245 – Confederate 15th Alabama Flagbearer, Gettysburg, 1863 | W.Britain

The 15th Alabama Infantry played a prominent part in the fighting at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863, when Confederate forces launched a major attack against the Union left flank around the Round Tops.

Advancing across difficult terrain in intense summer heat, the regiment became heavily engaged during the struggle around Little Round Top. Together with other Confederate units, the 15th Alabama repeatedly pressed the Federal position during some of the most famous fighting of the battle.

At the heart of a Civil War regiment were its colours. Amid smoke, noise and confusion, the flag provided a highly visible rallying point that helped soldiers locate their regiment and maintain formation.

This made the role of the flagbearer both prestigious and extremely dangerous. Carrying a large and highly visible standard placed the soldier in an exposed position, and colour bearers frequently became targets during an engagement.

W.Britain’s 31245 Confederate 15th Alabama Flagbearer, Gettysburg, 1863 captures this important battlefield role and makes a striking centrepiece for a Confederate infantry formation, particularly for collectors building a Gettysburg display.
