Guard duty is one of the most fundamental military responsibilities. A soldier assigned as a guard (or sentry) is tasked with protecting a designated area such as a base perimeter, ammunition storage, command post, or secure facility. The role exists across all modern armies and is a core part of military discipline and security.

In the Australian Army, guard duty involves strict procedural rules. A sentry must remain alert at all times, challenge unknown persons, enforce access control, and respond according to established rules of engagement. The emphasis is on vigilance, restraint, and correct escalation procedures.

A guard typically carries a service rifle (such as the F88 Austeyr in modern service), along with magazines, communication equipment, and identification gear. The weapon is kept in a controlled state of readiness, not casually handled, reflecting strict safety and discipline requirements.

Historically, guard duty has been a constant feature of Australian military operations, including during deployments such as the Vietnam War, where soldiers protected bases, forward positions, and supply points under the threat of infiltration or attack.

Guard posts may be static (fixed sentry points) or mobile (patrol-based security). In both cases, soldiers operate in pairs or rotations to maintain alertness over extended periods. Night duty is particularly demanding due to reduced visibility and heightened risk of surprise contact.

The role is as much psychological as it is tactical. A guard must maintain discipline, avoid fatigue-induced errors, and remain prepared for sudden escalation while often experiencing long periods of inactivity.
