ROM006 – The Aquilifer

The aquilifer, or eagle-bearer, held one of the most prestigious positions within a Roman legion.

He carried the aquila – the legion's eagle, a symbol treated with enormous reverence by the soldiers. Losing the eagle to an enemy was considered a profound disgrace, while recovering a captured standard could become an event of great importance.
