The eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Edward VII waited longer than most heirs of his era before finally ascending the British throne in 1901 at the age of 59.

His relatively short reign gave its name to the Edwardian era, remembered for its distinctive society, fashion and culture during the years before the First World War.
