Few American commanders became more closely associated with the Vietnam War than General William C. Westmoreland. He commanded U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) from 1964 until 1968, a period that saw American troop strength increase dramatically and the conflict develop into a major conventional war.

Westmoreland became a familiar public face of America's involvement in Vietnam, overseeing operations during some of the conflict's most significant years, including the period leading up to and during the Tet Offensive of 1968.
