The American infantryman's experience in Vietnam involved enormous amounts of time spent walking and patrolling, often carrying heavy equipment through heat, humidity and difficult terrain.
The informal term “grunt” became closely associated with the ordinary infantry soldier who carried much of the burden of ground combat.
