One of the best-known figures in Oliver Twist, Fagin presides over a group of young pickpockets operating in the poorer districts of Victorian London.

Dickens created him as a sinister and manipulative figure who trains children to steal and benefits from the goods they bring back. His association with the Artful Dodger, Oliver and Bill Sikes places him at the centre of some of the novel's darkest episodes.
