Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe (1898–1975) was a U.S. Army officer who served as the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. He is best known for defending Bastogne, Belgium, and responding "Nuts!" to a German ultimatum to surrender on December 22, 1944.
