CTSM-04N – Samnite Warriors | John Jenkins Designs

During the early history of the Roman Republic, the Samnites occupied the mountainous regions of central and southern Italy, where their military traditions developed around the challenges of fighting in rugged terrain.

The Samnites belonged to the wider Oscan-speaking peoples and were organised into a confederation of four principal tribes: the Pentri, Caudini, Hirpini and Caraceni.

Their conflicts with Rome between 343 and 272 BC became an important turning point in the development of Roman military tactics.

According to the historical notes provided by John Jenkins Designs, the Samnites fought in a loose phalanx formation, which allowed greater freedom of movement than the traditional Greek-style phalanx.

Their experience in mountain warfare and ambush tactics presented a serious challenge to Roman forces, whose more rigid formations were less effective in confined and uneven terrain.

Samnite soldiers were recognised for their brightly coloured and decorated tunics, while their military equipment included javelins, short spears, shields and distinctive Italian bronze armour.

CTSM-04N – Samnite Warriors by John Jenkins Designs is a four-figure set featuring two warriors wearing red tunics and two dressed in blue tunics with red trim.

The soldiers are depicted in dynamic close-combat poses, armed with spears and carrying shields.

The contrasting clothing colours reflect the variety of appearance among Samnite warriors, providing an effective addition to a larger infantry formation.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Rome collection, this set complements the other Samnite warriors and early Roman infantry figures.
