MAD-01 – Beja Warriors Charging #1
The Beja were among the most formidable warriors encountered by British and Egyptian forces during the fighting in the eastern Sudan in the 1880s.
MAD-01 – Beja Warriors Charging #1 captures the energy of warriors moving rapidly into close combat.
The Beja were not a single military regiment but peoples of northeastern Africa whose communities occupied areas extending through the eastern Sudan and towards the Red Sea. During the Mahdist conflict, sections of the Beja fought under leaders associated with the Mahdist cause, most famously Osman Digna.
British soldiers commonly referred to some Beja warriors as “Fuzzy-Wuzzies,” a historical term derived from their distinctive hairstyles but one best understood today within its colonial-era context.
Their reputation among British troops was strongly influenced by encounters in which determined attacks brought warriors into extremely close combat despite modern rifle and machine-gun fire.
MAD-01 works particularly well at the front of a Sudan diorama, with other warriors following behind in a looser formation.
