ROM192 – Two Roman Auxiliary Archers | Thomas Gunn

The Roman Army was supported by a wide variety of auxiliary troops recruited from across the territories of the Roman Empire.

These soldiers, known as the Auxilia, provided specialist military capabilities that complemented the heavily equipped Roman legionaries. Among them were archers, cavalrymen and slingers, whose skills were particularly valuable during military campaigns.

Roman auxiliary archers were recruited from regions with established traditions of archery, including Syria, Thrace and other eastern provinces.

Although trained for combat, auxiliary soldiers also participated in the daily routines of army life, including gathering provisions and hunting when circumstances permitted.

ROM192 – Two Roman Auxiliary Archers by Thomas Gunn portrays two auxiliary soldiers during a quieter moment away from the battlefield.

One figure carries a hunting hawk perched upon his gloved arm, while his companion holds a recently caught and prepared rabbit. Both soldiers carry their bows, identifying them as members of the Roman auxiliary archery units.

This unusual two-figure set captures an aspect of Roman military life rarely represented in miniature form.

Ideal for a Roman legion encampment, hunting scene or military supply area, these figures add character and realism to a display of everyday life within the Roman Army.
