AP-01A – Persian Sparabara Standard Bearer and Officer | John Jenkins Designs

During the 6th to 4th centuries BC, the Achaemenid Persian Empire maintained a powerful army incorporating soldiers from many different regions and military traditions.

One of the distinctive infantry formations within the Persian military was the Sparabara, whose name is associated with the large wicker shields used by its front-line soldiers.

These shields could be placed upon the ground to provide a protective barrier for ranks of archers positioned immediately behind them.

The Persian infantry formation described by John Jenkins Designs incorporated a front rank of shield-bearing spearmen protecting nine ranks of archers.

The Sparabara were equipped with spears and large rectangular wicker shields, with some soldiers also wearing protective quilted linen armour.

Although such formations could be effective against many opposing armies, they faced particular difficulties when confronted by heavily armed Greek hoplites.

AP-01A – Persian Sparabara Standard Bearer and Officer by John Jenkins Designs is a two-figure set representing command personnel within a Persian infantry formation.

The set includes a standard bearer and an officer, providing an important addition to the shield-bearing soldiers and archers of the Achaemenid Persian army.

Designed to complement the other Sparabara figures in the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this set is ideal for creating a complete Persian infantry display.
