AP-09BN – Persian Sparabara Archers | John Jenkins Designs
The military forces of the Achaemenid Persian Empire relied upon several different types of infantry, including the distinctive Sparabara formations.
The Sparabara were shield-bearing soldiers whose large wicker shields provided protection for the archers positioned behind them.
Their name is associated with the Persian term for shield-bearers, reflecting their important defensive role within the army.
According to the historical information provided by John Jenkins Designs, these infantry formations could be organised with nine ranks of archers protected by a single front rank of shield-bearing spearmen.
This arrangement allowed the Persian army to deliver concentrated missile fire while reducing the exposure of its archers to enemy attacks.
AP-09BN – Persian Sparabara Archers by John Jenkins Designs is a four-figure set depicting Persian archers wearing distinctive yellow caps.
The figures represent different stages of the archery sequence, including soldiers with arrows positioned upon their bowstrings and others who have just released their arrows.
The combination of firing poses creates a realistic representation of a Persian archery formation.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Achaemenid Persian Empire collection, this set complements the shield-bearing Sparabara infantry and the other Persian archers.
