AP-100B – Scythed Chariot (Purple) | John Jenkins Designs
The Achaemenid Persian Empire, established by Cyrus the Great during the 6th century BC, became one of the largest and most powerful empires of the ancient world. Its military forces incorporated a remarkable variety of soldiers, cavalry and specialised battlefield weapons.
Among the most formidable and unusual weapons employed by the later Persian armies was the scythed war chariot.
These impressive vehicles were drawn by four armoured horses and controlled by a single armoured charioteer. They were designed to charge directly into enemy formations, using their considerable weight, speed and projecting blades to disrupt the opposing troops.
The ancient historian Xenophon described Persian scythed chariots as having heavy wheels with studded rims, a broad wheelbase for stability and two draught poles.
Other ancient descriptions refer to long scythe blades projecting from the axles and yokes, designed to inflict devastating damage upon soldiers caught in their path.
However, the chariots were also vulnerable. They required sufficient distance to build up speed, and determined light infantry could attempt to disrupt their charge before they reached their intended target.
AP-100B – Scythed Chariot by John Jenkins Designs recreates one of these formidable Persian fighting vehicles, featuring four armoured horses and a single charioteer.
This version features the distinctive purple colour scheme, providing an alternative to the red variation, AP-100A.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this impressive model is an excellent centrepiece for a display depicting the military forces of the Achaemenid Persian Empire.
