HITT-02 – Hittite War Chariot | John Jenkins Designs

The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC remains one of the most celebrated military engagements of the ancient world, bringing together the armies of two powerful empires.

The Egyptian forces of Pharaoh Ramesses II confronted the Hittite army commanded by King Muwatalli II near the fortified city of Kadesh, beside the Orontes River.

The battle became famous for the enormous number of war chariots involved, with John Jenkins Designs describing an estimated 6,000 chariots participating across the opposing forces.

The Hittite war chariot was a heavier fighting vehicle than the Egyptian equivalent, carrying a crew of three soldiers rather than two.

Its centrally positioned axle and substantial body allowed it to accommodate the additional crewman, while its six-spoked wheels formed part of its distinctive construction.

These chariots were designed for aggressive battlefield manoeuvres and close-quarter engagements, with their crews employing spears and javelins against opposing forces.

HITT-02 – Hittite War Chariot by John Jenkins Designs depicts a two-horse Hittite war chariot carrying three crewmen.

The set includes:

  • A chariot driver, controlling the horses.

  • A warrior throwing a javelin, engaging the opposing forces.

  • A third warrior holding a javelin, preparing to take part in the fighting.

The combination of the two horses, detailed chariot and three crewmen captures the appearance of a Hittite fighting vehicle during the Battle of Kadesh.

Part of the John Jenkins Designs The Ancients collection, this model complements the other Hittite war chariots, infantry and Syrian mercenary archers, allowing collectors to recreate a larger battlefield formation from this famous ancient engagement.
