WSP-41 – William Henry Ashley

William Henry Ashley was one of the most influential figures in the development of the American Rocky Mountain fur trade. A businessman, politician and entrepreneur, Ashley helped establish the system that would become closely associated with the legendary mountain men of the 1820s.

Together with Andrew Henry, Ashley organised expeditions of trappers into the western wilderness. He is particularly associated with the development of the rendezvous system, where trappers could gather at predetermined locations to sell their furs and purchase supplies without returning all the way to established settlements.
