The 11th New York Volunteer Infantry, known as the "Fire Zouaves," was organized in May 1861 from New York City fire companies. Their fighting style was characterized by rapid loading, aimed for three shots per minute using paper cartridges, and a unique uniform of red shirts, blue fezzes, and zouave jackets.
